Thought I’d Share This With You

Guys,

I was checking through my to do list before the year ends and I thought I’d share this with you guys. So just bear with me.

I started doing part time freelance back in 2007 at that time I was working full time as a human switchboard (call center) and didn’t give a shit about things like SSS, Pag-Ibig, PhilHealth and tax and what not after all the company took care of the remittance for me.

Before I resigned May of last year I had a few worries, its a huge risk to go full time freelance I’d lose all the benefits I was accustomed to namely: SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-Ibig, and the health insurance package provided for the company.

SSS – I continued my contribution switching from “Privately Employed” to “Voluntary Member”. With my previous job my monthly SSS contribution was P1560, contribution rate is computed based on your basic salary. Back then my basic salary falls under this bracket (see: SSS Contribution Chart) You can choose to pay as much as P1560 or P312 per month that’s up to you. Those without an SSS number yet its an easy process and you can get your ID number the same day you work on processing it. Its the ID card that takes forever to get to you.

PhilHealth – this may not sound much but it helps in times of hospitalization. I updated my record from employed to voluntary member and every month I pay 100 PHP. Yes contribution is only a hundred bucks per month. For those of you married, only one spouse has to apply and the wife and kids will be placed as beneficiaries so they too will be covered in case they get hospitalized.

Pag-Ibig – am not sure really I continued this when I have no intention of applying for a housing loan but just in case I change my mind a few years from now I have this handy. Its P200 per month only.

Health Insurance – this is prolly the toughest. I was used to just going to any clinic here in Cebu to see a quack and just present the insurance card issued by my previous company as means of payment. I spent a lot of time thinking on this and researching on which provider to go for. I ended up with Kaiser, am paying a P2970 per month which gives me the ff: benefits.

Income Tax – this I still have to work on. Almost all of the freelancers I know do not give a shit about filing for income tax. Why pay it when the company you work for is not registered in the Philippines? Why pay it when you have the option not to? Why pay it when it just ends up in the pockets of corrupt government officials? But the thing is if you don’t declare your income the government thinks of your as unemployed hence you won’t be qualified to file for loans. ITR is an absolute requirement when filing for housing loans and what not.

Now am not sure what your plans are or if you just doing this freelance gig until something better comes along, or if your doing this part time or what. But as for me am doing this for the long haul, am a full time freelancer / grad school student and am just covering all basis. I don’t wanna end up finding myself in a retirable age without any government pension because I neglected to pay my SSS contribution.

Applying for everything above can seem a bit daunting because of the legwork involved but its worth it … just think of the big picture. I’m not sure if this helps you in anyway but thought I’d share it with you guys just the same.

Dress

I have never been a girly kind of girl and would do anything just to avoid wearing a dress. I can actually count with the fingers in my hands the number of times I’ve actually worn a dress where the occasion does not allow jeans and Chucks. Now I do like attending weddings but the downside and this one makes me groan is the fact that I have to wear a dress. I’ll be attending a friend’s wedding early next year and am already fretting on what to wear more so now that I will be looking at the plus size dress section. I doubt I’d manage to lose the extra weight before the wedding day.

Landed a Contract

It has been a while since I’ve spoke with Brad and to hear his voice again was kind of refreshing. He talked about work and how busy he has been for the past couple of months and how life has been good to him. He asked how I was and I told him what I have been doing and how I relieved I am to have left the call center industry. He informed me of a good news from last week where the company he works for landed the Olympia steel buildings contract which was his sure fire ticket to getting a promotion. We chatted non stop for about an hour and I have to thank Skype and wifi for making this possible without having to pay a cent.

Paperless

Despite today’s current influx of technology I was quite surprised at how the university I attend to is still on traditional setting. I mean there were tons of papers, they have not entered the computer age yet. It’s crazy! It actually made wonder how they’d handle the document scanning the moment they decide to go computerized. The Registrar’s Office are has one whole room stacked with nothing but steel shelves full of documents, as ancient as the Spaniard conquest. Unbelievable!

Ala Carte

Food! I miss good food like the ones in the photo. Maybe I miss just the meals at Figaro most specially the Dory Provencal which happens to be my absolute fave.

I’ll probably have some this weekend. It’s been nagging at me for a while …

Yet Another Rerun

I’ve been wondering what it would be like if I end up like Carrie at the age of 35 with not much money on my account. At least for her she’s got over a hundred pair of 400 dollar shoes, me I don’t have anything LOL. Annie and I were watching another rerun of Sex and the City when she asked what is term life insurance and if whether or not we should start about investing in them. We’ve probably seen all the episodes from season 1 to season 6 time and again but it still feels like the first time. We just could not get over the fabulous array of clothes and shoes.

Chucks!

Saw this pair of irresistibly simple yet cute pair of Chucks online while I was looking for Ateliers Arthur shoes for a friend. Isn’t it gorgeous or what? Normally I would go for anything in shades of pink ones but this pair looks rather delightful, if I can find this color and design at the local Chucks boutique here I would definitely grab a pair. :)

Landing an Online Freelance Job

The Things You Can Do To Mess Up Your Chances of Landing An Online Job

Last week I have had the chance to review resumes sent by prospective applicants for a job posting my boss posted at onlinejobs.ph. I have to say the responses we received for that job listing was quite overwhelming. My boss provided me the guidelines I need to follow when shortlisting the CVs we have received. The short list would then be used for the interview she will be scheduling.

One of the things I learned is that even though this is an online job, the same rules apply when creating your resume as that of applying for an “actual physical” job.

Here are a few things I noticed that blew up the chances of a perfectly good resume.

1. Not paying close attention – On the job listing my boss created, she specifically asked for each applicant to send in a motivational letter and a resume.

I noticed that several of the applications I have received, the applicants just email something like:

“Hi.I am perfect for the job, I like it very much please contact me for an interview.”

I mean seriously! Where’s the motivational letter or cover letter in that?

2. Tone – How you write your motivational letter or cover letter gives your prospective boss an idea of what you are like based on how well you write. We were both put off when we read this cover letter we received which goes:

I have been working as a manager for a call center for several years but since I am new to this freelance type of work, I don’t mind starting as a customer service rep.

Come on! Does that sound arrogant or what? My boss immediately sacked his application without bothering to look at the resume. I on the other hand checked out this person’s resume and I have to say it was pretty impressive but the tone he set on his cover letter put off my boss saying she does not want to work with someone who has an attitude. I have to agree.

3. Salary – I always thought that discussions about pay should take place somewhere during the interview. But I have gone through several cover letters where the applicant clearly states the salary range they want and I have to say they were rather bold in stating this.

I am not an expert at landing online jobs nor do I have the qualifications to offer career advice but I have been doing part time online freelance since 2007 and by June 2010, I started doing it full time. I have had the chance to land on various “Virtual Assistant” projects and at the moment I work as a full time email support rep and virtual assistant for a clothing line based in Europe.

Something Like This

So working from home has worked very well for me and I love it … I now wonder why I put up with all that I did back at my old work when clearly I could have just up and leave and started working freelance then and there. I already knew the answer to that .. fear of the unknown, leaving one’s comfort zone is difficult not to mention I wasn’t all too ready to take the risk but now am glad I did and I’m happy and really contented with how things are going.

One of the things I need is a replacement of my old swivel chair, I have been using my old one for close to 4 years and it is now screaming at me for replacement. I was checking for modern furniture online when I found this one below:

This beauty is called a Shuttle Swan Lounge chair and I like it. Then I realized that this would not work as an office chair, maybe if I could find something like this in a swivel style and in pink then maybe am all set.

Tired

I’m not complaining, really! It’s that kind of “tiredness” where you still manage to smile and feel contented at the end of the day before your head hits the pillow.

I have had instances of falling asleep under similar circumstances and my little girl would would nudge me awake, saying I was falling asleep at the wrong place. *Smart girl* I intend to catch up on my sleep on weekends and I can’t wait for it to arrive soooooon.

No Traveling For A While

Despite what many people used to think I do ran out of money too lol so I won’t be traveling for a while. All I can do for now is work, work, work and save up. *sigh* I sure am missing a lot by not going with my friends on their travel escapades.

Wedding Gift

A few weeks ago a friend of mine from college sent me a message on Facebook inviting me to attend her beach wedding. But due to circumstances beyond control I was not able to attend. When I saw this giveaway [posted above] as one of the suggested wedding gifts for couples I remembered her wedding and I wondered if its a little too late to give her a present now.

Hair As White As Snow

Ever since I finished watching Koizora (the movie) I long to bleach my hair white, as white as snow (fa ru xue) I have long curly hair and for a very while now I have been thinking of bleaching the entire length white. I remember Evana Lynch’s bleached hair when she played the role of Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter.

The thing is a friend of mine who is knowledgeable when it comes to hair and makeup said that it would damage my hair big time and that the salons here in the city do have the technology to accomplish it.

Colorful Office Supplies

The Japanese are known for their kawaii (cute) culture and according to Lisa during her last trip to Tokyo she found a really cute and colorful office supply shop that sells all sorts of cute things. Ballpens, paper clips, paper products, memo sheets, lots of stationery sets, color pens and a bunch of other things. Lisa said it was the perfect place to shop for cute items.

For Jenny

The school year is bout to end this March but Jenny’s current backpack had a huge tear down at the bottom making it impossible to use. So despite her mom’s hesitation we went ahead an purchased one of those pink wheeled backpacks. Like me Jenny has a an affinity for the color pink so she chose the first one she saw on display. Her mom said she’d have to take good care of it since she would continue using it till next school year.

Taiwanese TV Series

I’ve seen a lot of blog posts where the blogger has gotten addicted to Korean TV series and most of these bloggers call it being addicted to KPop. I on the other am not a huge fan of Korean drama series but am a huge fan of Taiwanese, Chinese and Japanese TV series. I started watching Taiwanese TV series when I started my Mandarin class.

I have seen Meteor Garden (I so love Huaze Lei), Devil Beside You (Rainie Yang is so cute), MARS (Yep I am a huge fan of Zai Zai), Corner Of Love (with Barbie Hsu).

At the moment I am watching Down With Love starring Jerry Yan and Ella Chen. Ella is just super cute in this series … I just love her.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of us. May we keep staying in love and full of love.

Geektastic: Stories From The Nerd Herd

A friend of mine mentioned wanting to buy this book when we met up a couple of weeks back. She is a certified geek and I kind of think that I am one too, after all birds of the same feather do flock together. She said the title of the book is Geektastic by Holly Black and when she asked the sales lady about it we were told it’s already out of stock.

Curiosity got the best of me so I searched the web far and wide for a possible dowloadable copy of an ebook and I have uploaded it on Megaupload.

If you’re interested in an ebook copy of the book then download it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=R1ZBA9ZE

Going Karaoke

One of my favorite pastimes with friends is going karaoke or videoke. Normally it’s people from my old work and we’d end up going to Beat Box or Mango for some videoke fun. I remembered how Janey used to have select the karaoke songs since she does not know the title and the artists. We’d end up selecting songs from Gin Blossoms, Kenny Rogers, Chicago, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. Some Air Supply songs too. Thinking about all this made me want to go and sing my heart out.

Jay Chou Wallpaper

I am overly obsessed with the talent of this guy and he is currently the wallpaper of my other laptop. After hearing the song Gui Ji I got hooked and did everything I could to find the movie “Hidden Track” online and watch it. He is just one amazing artist.

Scientist

Was listening to a song by Coldplay called The Scientist and it reminded me when we were kids this someone I used to know would keep saying that she would want to become a scientist when we grow up. 15 years later she ended up becoming a nurse saying that science jobs like being a scientist and becoming as an astronaut is just wishful thinking.

Cute Address Labels

Found these custom address labels while searching the web for free patterns to use in making my own. I was thinking of going with Monokuro Boo like the one below:

I found various tutorials online on how to make them and surprisingly it is quite easy. There were web sites that suggested that using Adobe Photoshop is the best way to go but for someone like me who knows nothing about Photoshop the easiest route would be to use Microsoft Publisher. Templates are readily available within the program and all you have to do is customize the image and the text then you’re good to go.

Candy Pink

Even though I do not know how to swim but the idea of getting one of those waterproof digital cameras has caught my interest. Especially after seeing that there are a large colorful variety available in the market. I have seen pink, blue and black from Fujifilm then there’s similar color offerings from Canon. Checking out the various prices from various shops I have decided to go with the candy pink model from Fujifilm.

Bowling With Friends

I am not a fan of bowling till now that is until my friends and I went there to try it out. It was my first time to go bowling and I gotta say the first attempts went straight to the gutter it was embarrassing. But as the game goes on I’ve managed to hit strike twice and it felt rather good. I sure look forward to the next time we’d go bowling.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Helena

After watching the music video of Helena by My Chemical Romance I realized that such a funeral is possible though the funeral expenses would probably be very costly. But think about it, it should be worth all the trouble and every cent. Souchi would probably call such a funeral very fashionable. I should probably have something like that prepare for my own funeral. What do you think?

Lighted Medicine Cabinet

I have been planning on having a medicine cabinet constructed for me. I have been using a make shift shelf and cookie jars as my storage for my meds and though it has worked quite so well so far but I realized it is not appropriate. I have been searching the web for designs on medicine cabinets that I could pattern the construction of my own.
