What on earth is GPS? I’ve been hearing these three letters the whole time am taking calls, MS Streets and Trips 2007 with GPS. The whole time I never understood what GPS is, what it stands for, what it means or what it can do. Now my curiosity got the best of me and I googled it while waiting for to completion of music downloads.

GPS or Global Positioning System is a satelilte based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites places into orbit by the U.S. Defense. Was originally intended for military applications but sometime in 1980’s the government decided to make available for civilian use.

As its made available for civilian use, many vehicles have GPS devices in them so as to track its whereabout in cases of carknapping and roadside assistance. Motorist with GPS devices can summon help or ask for directions through it. It’s also use to track the whereabouts of a lost pet, can check on the pet’s heart rate and temperature and location. And so on …

Am not sure if my phone has GPS embedded prolly not but there are various shops online selling brand new and used GPS devices at a reasonable price.
